This unit discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using a course book. Using a coursebook can allow the students to follow a very clear and proven methodic to progress. They can readily see their progression and gain confidence from this. The drawback of using any course book is that is may not perfectly fit the needs of your class. A teacher must choose the coursebook carefully, paying close attention to the material being offered, the price, availability, supplemental materials provided, difficulty, and appropriateness for the group.
No matter which coursebook is chosen a good teacher will also omit, supplement, adapt, and replace material to custom fit the material for the class to ensure a thorough approach.
A teacher can supplement the coursebook with original materials (newspapers, magazine, found material) or create material specifically geared twowards a particular goal or lesson.
