The present tense is important for students to understand as they learn English. There are four forms of the present tense. The first form is the present simple. This is the basic form for actions that are taking place in the present. The second form is the present continuous. This is used when there is an action in progress. This form uses the helping verb 'be' and the verb ends with -ing. The third form is the present perfect. This form relates the past to the present and uses the helping verb 'have' plus the past participle. The fourth form is the present perfect continuous. This also relates past activity to the present and is often used when an activity is likely to continue in the future and has been ongoing for some time. This form uses 'have' + 'been' + verb with -ing.
