The unit 14 is about lesson materials and course books.
Lesson materials: Lesson materials can be divided into two groups: Authentic materials and created materials. Authentic material are usually more interesting and motivating. However, it can reduce the confidence of students when they don’t understand the material. As for created material, it can be a good supplement to textbooks. They are fun and can be designed to concentrate on student’s weak points. It is important to have a balance of these kinds of materials within the activities.
Course books: Course books can be very useful for the class. It provides a syllabus which is graded to the students’ level, a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills work, and it continuously practices language items previously introduced. Besides that, course books have normally been tried, tested and reviewed for a couple of times, so they are usually a consistent material. However, they do not always fit the fit the specific needs and interests of all the class members. So, the teacher must omit non relevant content, replace some activities when they are not so appropriate, supplement them when a reinforce is needed, and adapt them to the teacher’s own style.
