This unit discussed modals, phrased verbs, and passive voice. These parts of grammar need to be included for students as they progress in their understanding of the English language. Modals are commonly used words that are auxiliary verbs that express things like obligation, possibility , or permission. It is important for students to learn how to use modals and understand how formal or strong their word choice is. Phrased verbs are verbs that have more than one word used to express an idea, such as 'turn up.' Those two words are used together as a verb to express an idea. Passive voice is used when the subject of the sentence is not known or perhaps not important.
