The duration of the class is broken up into different phases. No matter what type of ESA lesson plan, each class should begin with the engage phase and end in the activate phase. Different exercises can be used during all three phases and it is important to mix it up time and again to keep students' interest up. During the engage and activate phase, fluency and comfort with the language is more important than accuracy and structure. During these times it can be helpful for the teacher to take note of what skills need refining or where confusion lays. The study phase is the most important in terms of precision and accuracy. The best is for a student to self diagnose the mistake and correct themself, then a student to student correction and lastly, a student to teacher correction. Code can be helpful in grading written language. Successful elicitation is key for a productive lesson.
