In my opinion having a lesson plan is crucial for having an effective lesson. It gives structure and ideas for the best possible way to conduct the class to achieve certain objectives, and also anticipate problems in advance. It acts as a record for future reference of what students have been taught. It should be clear and simple enough to follow if you need to check it during class. It shouldn't be a tight inflexible plan as there might be a learning possibility missed if it is followed rigidly. It should have a good mix of skills and objectives so that it aids learning by keeping it challenging. Finally a good teacher evaluates HIMSELF on his own on a regular basis to continue to improve and progress as a teacher.
