Course Books and Lesson Materials
Some teachers like using course books, while others despise them. The choice of whether or not to use a course book, and if so, which one, can be quite a complex issue. However, for many students, compared to the course book, materials created by the teacher are more interesting, more relevant and a welcome change from the course book. Following on, materials can be divided into two groups, these include authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are language materials designed to be used by native speakers. Authentic materials are everyday materials that have been produced to fulfil some social purpose in the language community. Some examples include programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, films on video and many more.
Conversely, created materials are usually designed by the teacher to replace a supplement materials from a course book. Many artistic teachers use their abilities for material production, whilst those who are less artistically gifted have to rely on pictures cut out from magazines or newspapers. Common created materials include, crosswords, word search puzzles, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities and picture stories.
Nevertheless, whilst using a course book, there are many advantages and disadvantages associated. Some advantages include:
- It provides security for teachers and students alike.
- It offer continuity and progression.
- IT is usually attractive and appealing to the eye.
Some disadvantages include:
- It does not always fit the specific needs of the students.
- A course book is almost like a compromise.
