This unit focused on receptive language skills. In particular, the receptive skills are reading and listening. Both of these skills are equally important. In any lesson, a teacher will probably focus on receptive and productive skills but there may be more of a focus on one or the other at times. When we are reading and listening we need to process the information in a helpful way to gain true understanding. We use skills like skimming, deduction from content, and getting detailed information in order to process things. Certain problems can come up for students when reading and listening so a teacher needs to thoughtfully help students. The teacher can give important vocabulary early on, choose interesting and varied topics, and pick texts that are appropriate for the level the students are at.
