Teaching Pronunciation & Phonology
Every ESL student should have a pronunciation element in their language studies. However, pronunciation is probably the most neglected aspect of English language teaching. Most pronunciation tends to concentrate on individual sounds. An effective teacher considers the teaching of pronunciation an integral part of the course. Therefore, students are ultimately concerned about their pronunciation as they are with any other aspect of learning English. However, this difficulty among ESL students can be overcome by using a variety of strategies in a lesson. This will allow the students to be successful and gain confidence with English pronunciation.
Nevertheless, phonology on the other hand is about the study, science, analysis and classification of the physical properties of sounds. The terms phonetics and phonology are often used interchangeably, although the term phonology is increasingly used to indicate the whole sound system of a particular language, e.g. the phonology of English. Furthermore, there are many more aspects associated with teaching the English language, intonation, stressing on particular words for further emphasis.
