In this unit i learned that first lessons need special attention as they set the tone for the rest of the course. Its a vital time to establish rapport with the students and familiarize yourself with names and their interests as well as goals they would like to achieve. Questionnaires or surveys come to mind or to keep it fun with a game of "tell me about..." or "pass the ball" where a small soft ball is passed around while questions are being answered to get to know each other. Needs analysis/ diagnostics can be done as well. Always start class with warmers, games or fun activities to stimulate the students and excite them for the class (Hangman, Pictionary, Tongue Twisters and memory games).
Use of native language can be problematic if used excessively around the class, making students not listen to teachers instructions in English but rather depend on peer translation- encouragement and reminders come to mind when dealing with such issue. Other issues like reluctant students are dealt by using plenty of pair work, Use of controlled practice, role-play usage, and tape recorder usage.
Difficulties with listening to texts is another common issue, so teachers abandon it completely- this is not acceptable as it it vital for students listening skills.
