The first type of past tense is the past simple, it is used to express completed actions in the past. The positive form of the past simple is subject + past form of the verb (determine if it is a regular or irregular verb), and for the negative form subject + did not + verb. The past simple is used for completed past actions at a definite time. Second is the past continuous, it indicates that a certain action was in progress at a particular time in the past. The form of past continuous is subject + was/were+ verb+ ing.
