This unit focused on vocabulary, grammar, and functions when teaching a new language. Each of these areas needs to be taught in order for a student to have a good comprehension of the language. However, most lessons will focus on one particular area during the Study phase. When teaching vocabulary, a teacher needs to thoughtfully choose words that are helpful and important for students to know. Often, the straight arrow ESA structure is used for these types of lessons. When teaching grammar, a teacher needs to show the students what the grammatical form is, how it used, and how it is written. For functions of language, students need to gain a good understanding of how certain words and structures are used depending on the situation. Formal vs. informal wording will be helpful for students to learn.
