This unit explains four grammar points: modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, phrasal verbs and relative clauses.
Modal auxiliary verbs: they express the speaker’s feeling or attitude towards the main verbs. They can express possibility, ability, obligation, etc. Some examples of modal verbs are: may, might, can, must, should, etc.
Passive voice: In the passive voice, the object of an active verb becomes the subject. The passive voice is formed by the verb ‘be’ (in the tense of the active verb) + the participle of the verb.
Phrasal verbs: are verbs combined with one or two particles. There are three types of phrasal verbs: intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable. Some examples of phrasal verbs are: calm down, call off, looking forward to, etc.
Relative clauses: are dependents clauses that modify a noun. A relative clause can be defining or not defining, depending on whether the information on it is essential or not.
