I hadn't realized how difficult it was to explain why certain past tenses are used. I will need to concentrate mostly on the past perfect and past perfect continuous. The past simple and past continuous are fairly easy and are quite similar to the present tenses. As for the perfect forms, the verb "to have" must be present plus the past participle verb. The perfect continuous form must include "to have" plus "been" plus the verb..."ing". I think it is important to focus on the structure of the sentence to better understand the usage.
