This unit talked about the difference between teaching writing and teaching speaking.
Fluency, as opposed to accuracy, is most important when it comes to speaking. You want to create an environment that promotes comfortable exchange. In the Engage portion of the lesson, you want to get the students thinking in English. In the Study portion of the lesson is where you look for accuracy. In the Activate portion, you want there to be a fluency of language where the students have started to think creatively in English.
It is also important to address the students' writing abilities because improper spelling, punctuation, or syntax can give the allusion that the student is not competent in the subject, not just the language.
Games are a wonderful way to get students of all ages comfortable and motivated. Many of them will facilitate speaking and writing.
