Teaching new language
I have understood that whatever the level of the class and however the teacher arranges the study phase of the lesson, there are four things that students need to do with new language.
1. be exposed to it.
2. understand its meaning.
3. understand how its constructed.
4. be able to practise and product it.
As a future English teacher I need to make sure that students are introduced to new language in a balanced and manageable way.
Vocabulary is an important focus of literacy teaching and refers to the knowledge or words, including their structure, use (grammar), meaning and links to other words (semantic relationships). Additionally, vocabulary is quite critical to the students learning and understanding, especially at the early stages when students are motivated to learn the basic words they need to get by in the language. The teaching method that a teacher adopts in a classroom will always consist of a engage, study and activate phase.
Following on, when introducing new language structures, this is largely determined by the level of the class and course syllabus that is being used. Students in most cases need to know what the language means, how it is used, what the grammatical form is and how it is said and written.
