This unit is about tests. There are five main types of tests: placement tests, diagnostic tests, progress tests, practice tests and proficiency tests.
Placement tests: are made to discover the student’s level of English. Based on this test, the school will decide which class the student should join. The level of the questions in a placement test are usually progressive (easy to hard).
Diagnostic tests: are similar in content to placement tests but they are mean to help the teacher to prepare lessons according to the students’ strengths and weaknesses.
Progress tests: are used to evaluate the students’ progress during the course.
Proficiency exams: are taken in order to certificate students’ proficiency. There are 3 types of proficiency tests: general English (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, etc), business English (TOEIC, BEC, etc), Academic English (TOEFL, IELTS, etc).
Practice test: are used to practice for an external proficiency test. The questions must be as near as possible of the real exam.
