I used to be a Manager in a class, and my teaching technique used to be Study only. So my students got bored and lost patience quite easily, and the result of the class wasn't great.
last week, I tried a new technique I learned from this unit with my students, they are at Elementary level, and the class was to teach them superlative degree for grammar and different scenery and landscape for vocabulary. I used the Boomerang ESA structure (Engage - Activate - Study - Activate)
(E)First, I showed pictures of different places: big cities, small towns, mountains, rivers and beaches and so on. And I ask them to pick their favorite vacation place and explain why they pick such place.
(A)And then, I grouped students who have the same interest in vacation place, and ask them to discuss for a while and then try to convince other groups their vacation place was better.
(S)After that, I showed more pictures with new vocabulary attached, such as volcanos, Vally and so on. and teach them the new vocabulary. and then explained when and how to use superlative degree.
(A)Finally, I did a writing task with my students. I asked the students to pick one of their favorite countries and ask them to recommend the best places to visit in that country, and explain why are they the best places to visit in that country.
the class went great, and I got "why does it feel today's class runs so quickly?" in respond.
These new techniques are easy to use, and they really did change the class atmosphere into a positive one.
