This unit was material that was wholly new to me. I think the most valuable things I learned were that there is a structure to follow, but one must be flexible about it. It seems to me that an effective teacher must be assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the students even as they take them through a lesson plan.
For example, in the ESA methodology, I can imagine that some days may require more time to warm students up during the initial Engage phase. If there are more (a larger head-count) students, or a wide variety of learner levels, the need to move everyone to the Study stage may require greater patience.
The way to move through the material successfully for all learners would be to constantly assess the varying degrees of understanding. In this way, learners who need more time can benefit also. At the same time, the basic structure ensures that there are some boundaries and guideline to make it through a lesson plan.
My main takeaway seems to be that these methodologies form a structure to lead someone like me through 'how' to proceed...the surrounding context to decide 'when' to move through the phases may require accurately assessing learners' comfort levels at given points in a lesson. From there, the activity and language can be offered at an appropriate pace to offer the most benefit.
