Teaching pronunciation and phonology is an essential part of teaching English to the students. Phonology is the study, science, analysis and classification of the physicql properties of the sounds. It is related to the whole sound system of a language where stress, intontation, rhythm and the International Phonetic A lphabet are an integral part of phonology. Intonation refers to the volume and pitch of the sound whereas stress refers to a specific word. Rise/ fall is the typical pattern and fall/rise indicates mostly surprise/ disagreement and the speaker waits for the answer of the other person. Different techniques of teaching intonation and stress are words, humming/singing, gesture, the board. Phonemic symbols included in a dictionary can be very useful to articulate correctrly English words. Using our speech organs we can produce different sounds. Teachers can use mouth diagrams, their own mouth, peer dictation or phonemes to trach successfully the sound of words.
