This unit is about course books and lesson materials. Knowing the right course books and suitable lesson materials are essential in teaching. Lesson materials can be authentic or created. Authentic materials are about anything you would hear or read from magazines, programs, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, videos/films, menus, etc. Created materials on the other hand are usually designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book such as crossword/puzzles, gap-fill exercises, role-play cards, flashcards, picture stories and the likes. Both are useful depending on the need of the students. Course books have advantages and disadvantages. It is up to the teachers to make the best out of course books by exploring ways to match the book to the need of the students, planning the lessons carefully by choosing lessons that will motivate the students, supplementing, replacing and adapting the lessons according to the students' needs, approaching the book critically, not basing all the lessons around course books and trying out new ideas and varying activities to fit the needs of the students.
