This unit illustrates various structures related to conditional sentences & rules regarding reported speech.Conditionals are statements with two parts i.e condition & results.Typically there are 4 types of conditionals.Zero conditional is used while talking about obvious & irrefutable facts,first conditional is used to talk about possibility of future events once the present or if clause is completed or happens.Second conditional is used to talk about things that are unlikely to happen,usually fantasies. Third is used to address hypothetical past that never occurred & hence fictitious results.It is important to teach mixed conditional sentence structures which are commonly used.For teaching conditionals we can use imaginative ideas such as moral delimas, partial situational cards,sentence chains etc which can be used interchangeably for teaching all types of conditionals.
While teaching reported speech we should clarify certain rules regarding changes in verbs, back shifting of tenses from the direct speech.Higher levels should be taught more conducive forms of reporting expressions,attitudes & emotions.Eg.I’m sorry,I’m late” can be reported as She apologised for coming late.Teaching ideas could be reporting role plays,interviews & headlines from magazines or newspapers etc.
