This unit discussed about two receptive skills - Reading and Listening. The reasons or motives for reading and listening can be divided into two wide-ranging categories; for a purpose and for entertainment. We read or listen for a purpose to help us achieve a particular goal or aim while we read/listen for entertainment because we find it pleasurable or enjoyable. Sometimes, it can be a mix of both motives. There is more to reading and listening than with just using our eyes and ears. It is not enough to read or listen only with our eyes and ears, but we also have to understand the words (context) and process them in our 'pre-existent knowledge' to gain true understanding (reading between the lines). Readers and listeners have to develop certain skills in order to do just that such as predictive skills, specific information or scanning, general idea or skimming, detailed information and deduction from context. The teaching and learning of receptive skills also presents potential problems in connection with language contained in a text (includes sentence length, word length and unfamiliar words), the topic and the tasks the students will perform. Fortunately, there are ways of approaching these language difficulties which includes pre-teaching problematic vocabulary and careful selection of texts.
