Conditionals are sentences that contain 'if' or 'when' and refer to past, present, and future possibilities. There are five main conditionals and they are zero, first, second, third and mixed conditionals. One would use a first conditional when they want to talk about a probable situation that will happen in the future once the condition/situation has been satisfied. If he studies hard (it's not certain that he will study hard), he will pass the test (if he studies hard then there will be a positive result). There are times when we have to report back to something someone else said (direct speech) that could take place in a different time than we are now or is just happening at the moment. We change the way we structure the verb and pronouns to fit what we are reporting.
