This unit discussed Evaluation and Testing. There are number of ways to assess a student's language level such as tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. Giving a test is probably the most commonly used method to assess a student's language level. Tests are given in different stages in a course. A placement test is designed to enable teachers to place new students into the correct class according to their language ability. A progress test should be used periodically to gauge what language has been remembered and what has been forgotten letting the teacher and students know which language items need more work. A diagnostic test is given at the start of the course to see what the students already know and help teachers prepare future lessons. A practice test is usually conducted to prepare students for an external exam. External examinations and proficiency tests measure proficiency in English at particular levels. Examples of External Exams are TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC.
