English teachers should always evaluate and assess students levels and progress. Tutorials, tests and and evaluation by the students are various ways to assess students language level. Tutorials can take place with individuals or more often with whole groups of students. Evaluation of the students can be done by means of questionnaires or guided discussions. Tests are handed to students at different stages in a course. Placement tests are usually taken before the start of a course in order to assess the language level of a student and assist the formation of groups at the same level. Diagnostic tests are given in order to evaluate what students know or do not know. Progress tests are given to the students usually every week, month or term to evaluate the students' progress. Some teachers also prefer regular short tests and then a flong, formal test every term. Practice tests are usually ahead of an external examination and assess the level of students reagrding the required standards and make them familiar with the structure of the test. Achievement tests are internal tests given at the end of the course or school year. External examinations include TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, Cambridge assessement, Trinity College London Skills for Life.
