I have often wondered why we learned language in the order typically presented as greetings, letters, numbers... etc. I see that choosing vocabulary by frequency is the best way to go if not dictated by a book or course syllabus. The quicker a student learns everyday words and phrases, the more they are engaged and likely to continue with the course. I remember being very disengaged as an adult learning language when we learned about school vocab. This chapter didn't apply to me directly and I was less willing to commit the vocabulary to memory. As a teacher, I need to find out what vocab is relevant to my students at first so they can interact daily and then go further to less commonly used vocab.
