Greenacres, Florida TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The easiest part about comparing the two videos seemed to be at the very beginning of each. The difference in establishing rapport and encouraging the students is stark. In the second lesson, the instructor introduces himself and greets students. I also observed quickly that the “first” instructor seemed impatient, dismissive, and somewhat overwhelmed. His use of language seemed beyond the students’ knowledge. For example, using the term “necessary” or “acceptable” seems confusing when the terms “must” or “can” would suffice. Another major difference was the pacing of each phase. Instructor 1 rushed through many aspects without checking for understanding. He did not leave enough time for the Activate Phase so that students could have sufficient STT. He focused on the negative, calling out mistakes harshly. This could inhibit many students. Although the first few minutes seemed to define the tone of the lesson, the mistakes, built on a poor beginning, continued throughout the first lesson.
These intangible aspects were important when imparting the actual lesson. While I found myself referring to past material again, I also found it helpful to look ahead to define the language point. Later in this course, I see Chapter 18 that covers modal verbs. I used additional sources (I do not have access to Lesson 18 yet) to familiarize myself with modal verbs. I then felt better equipped to analyze the videos that were provided for actual lesson content. These students were adults, so this seemed appropriate to their level. Drawing on work or restaurant examples gave them applicable situations with which to work. However, when looking at the rocky beginning and the uneven pacing in the first video, one could forgive the students for confusion about material even if it was at their level. What I was left with is the strong impression that the material and the way it is presented are both extremely important. Good attitude goes a long way!
