A good knowledge of grammar is necessary in order to explain these concepts. You have to understand prepositional phrases, direct objects, understand the difference in important or non-important details, and understand all tenses of verbs. These are concepts that I was never taught. I see that we have to be able to explain all the differences of sentence structure in our language, but does it really do any good to teach a student these ideas? For writing, I can see how teaching clauses would be important. But it seems like knowing how to define phrasal verbs and such doesn't help further knowledge becoming fluent.
