This unit focuses on teaching pronunciation and phonology. Being a native speaker, I found this unit difficult because I've never had to really consider things like stress or phonetic pronunciation - so I probably learnt something in every part of the unit.
The unit begins by defining pronunciation and intonation. Then it starts to analyse the different intonations used in everyday english. The most common being the rise and fall intonation. I personally felt I tend to speak with quite a flat intonation but having studied the unit I realise that I do allow my sentences to fall towards the end. It also looks at the fall/ rise pattern when a speaker expects a response. The best part of this section were the suggestions for teaching intonation - using nonsense words or humming and singing. I intend to try these techniques.
The unit then moves onto stress. It shows how stressing different words changes the meaning of a sentence. But it also details more complicated rules about stress when speaking multi-syllable words. Again, my own personal pronunciation is quite flat but this page gave me a lot of insight on how to help my students find the right stress for certain words. As with the previous part, the section which provided tips for teaching stress was very interesting.
The unit then moves onto the phonetic alphabet and a discussion of the mechanics of articulation. As a native speaker articulation has never been something I've had to learn specifically so this section was particularly useful especially in terms of explaining the actual mechanics of the different sounds like plosives and nasals and then the suggested teaching techniques like peer dictation and visuals.
