Unit 14 covered gave us information on Lesson Materials and Coursebooks. The unit started with an overview of Authentic Materials--any English primary source material that may be used to teach--as well as Created Materials--materials created by the teacher (e.g. a crossword) that are used to aid or supplement a lesson plan--with some example materials provided. Unit 14 further covered the selection of coursebooks; their advantages/disadvantages, how to select an appropriate book, and how best to navigate their use in a classroom.
I enjoyed this unit, and liked that there was an effort given to explaining how best to pick a course book with so many options out there. In any language class I've ever taken I have been subject to coursebook work and while I certainly see their use as limited in many ways, in retrospect I think that they are invaluable tools in getting the basics down, and really digging into certain language points. I thought 'Task 4' of the Task sheet for Unit 14 presented a good challenge to get in the mindset of drawing on topical subjects to teach language (in my case a New York Times article on Self-Driving Cars), and it really drove home the fact that the sky is the limit in terms of finding material that can spark discussion and engage students.
