In this unit, I learned about various ways to evaluate students. The unit starts out talking about tutorials and evaluation by students, and then goes on to list the different tests and their uses. The type of test usually given by teachers throughout the course is a progress test to evaluate what information the students have learned from the work covered in the class. This test can either be administered as a formal written test or an informal activity or game. Progress tests should make sure to test all four skills, i.e., speaking, listening, reading and writing. An achievement test might also be given to evaluate what the student has learned over a semester or a year. Another test mentioned in this unit is the placement test, of which there is an example. This test is used to make sure a new student is placed in the correct level of English according to his or her language ability. A similar test which is also given at the beginning of a course is a diagnostic test, which helps the teacher identify what the student does and does not know. The unit goes on to discuss several external exams, for which a teacher might given practice tests that are similar in style and length. There are several general external exams, such as the American TOEFL, the IELTS and the TOEIC, which measure English proficiency for various academic and work-place situations. The last external exams which I learned about were those belonging to the Cambridge Assessment group. This group of exams is extensive, ranging from the KET which is an elementary level exam, to the CPE which is a very advanced level exam. There are also specialized Cambridge assessments for business English, like the BEC and BULATS.
