This unit touches upon the four past tenses in English, along with their respective usages. After reading this unit, I have learned the following verb tenses:
- Past Simple: Commonly used to talk about actions completed at a definite time in the past
- Past Continuous ("to be" in past tense + verb -ing): Commonly used to talk about interrupted actions in the past, gradual development of a situation in the past, descriptions or an on-going action in the past.
- Past Perfect ("had" + past participle): Used to talk about an action in the past that preceded another action.
- Past Perfect Continuous ("had" + "been" + verb -ing): Mostly used to talk about longer actions or situations that began before a time in the past and continued up until that time with no indication whether or not the action continued beyond that time.
