The comment about giving ongoing feedback as a method of providing students with the information to self evaluate seems a very practical way to manage testing. Using end of week reviews and class discussions about achieving the aims of the week of lessons appears to be an appropriate way to keep everyone interested and involved.
Asking the students to evaluate the course work provides a greater student awareness of why the teacher is presenting certain material. It also gives the teacher insight into how to improve their teaching.
Tests are measurements (hopefully) of what the students need to study more, what level they are in, and also if they are making progress. There are many different types of tests, each designed for a specific reason.
