The units lists the different past tenses used in the English language and the situations in which they are used. The English past tenses begin with the past simple, used to describe finished past actions when a time is given as well as actions that clearly took place at a given time even if that time is unknown. Secondly, the past continuous, used for interrupted past actions, gradual past actions, and an action that started prior to another action and probably continued after. Thirdly, the past perfect, used to show that an action is definitively finished or to show that something else has been completed before another completed action. Finally, the past perfect continuous, used for longer actions that have been taking place continuously up until a precise moment in the past.
