Each class will either be considered a new group or an existing group. In a new group, students don't know each other and work will be required to build rapport. In an existing group, students are likely already comfortable with each other. In a first lesson, teachers must not use course books. The main focus should be on establishing rapport, finding out about the students and their needs and finding out the English level of each student. Starting out each class with a warming exercise such as hangman or Pictionary can help to motivate the students for the day. For large classes, pair work, worksheets, appointing group leaders and choral repetition are encouraged. If students seem reluctant to learn, using pair work, role play and a tape recorder may encourage participation.
