Unit 12 focuses on the teaching of productive skills. Speaking and writing are the two productive skills, and require special activities in order to be developed. There are accuracy and fluency activities which are very different although equally important. Accuracy activities are controlled by the teacher whereas fluency activities are not. The point is for the students to be able to speak freely and the focus is mainly not he flow of the conversation. It is therefore very important for the teacher to encourage interaction between the students in order for them to feel comfortable enough to speak in class. Writing skills are important as well. Spelling and punctuation can be a challenge for students but through creative writing the challenge can be easily defeated. Getting the students used to writing in English will improve their vocabulary and their grammar and reading can be a great help as well.
In this Unit I have learned how to teach productive skills to students and how important interaction is in the learning of these skills. Speaking and writing are always a challenge when learning a new language but through activities (controlled and not controlled) and proper feedback from the teacher it can be enjoyable to the students.
