Unit Seven is focused on using the ESA methods to teach new vocabulary, grammar and function.
Usually, lessons will introduce or be focused on one specific area at a time. Grammar and vocabulary lessons are generally suited to the use of the 'straight arrow' ESA approach. 'Boomerang' and 'patchwork' ESA structures are more commonly used for lessons focused on function. These last two methods provide more opportunity for students to actively use the new language in different ways. The 'patchwork' approach appears to require that students have a higher level of English proficiency.
