I have often thought in my own studies, both in english and other subjects, that reading, writing, and speaking are of the upmost importance, and lack a significant emphasis in university level courses. Most individuals and institutions probably consider one's language level acceptable if they are able to get into a university, but I have found this the case more than once. Interestingly enough, I never included listening with those skills, and I can see now that is is just as vital.
