This unit describes the different ways that are commonly used to evaluate students.
Evaluation can be in a tutorial, by students themselves or in the form of a test.
There are a number of different tests which a teacher might set a student and each has a different purpose. The placement test assesses the student's language skill at the start of a course and is used to judge his/her level. The diagnostic tst is similar in that it is given at the start of a course -but it is used by teacher's to assess what students in his/her class already know and helps him or her prepare lessons.
Progress tests are also very useful. They help the teach assess how much a students as remembered and what areas need to be reviewed or need more work. These type of tests should be run regularly and can also take the form of observation by the teacher during a class.
Finally there are practice tests which are used to prepare students for external exams.
The unit then gives a brief overview of the many different external exams an English student can take. These include TOEFL, IELTS and TOEIC.
