This unit introduces the different parts of speech in a sentence, along with their functions:
There's are several types of part of speech that we can find in a sentence:
- Articles
- Nouns (words that name people, things, ideas, qualities, etc)
- Pronouns (words that are used instead of more precise nouns)
- Verbs (words that either refer to an action or a state)
- Adverbs (words that add meaning or information to an action or state described by the verb)
- Adjectives (words that describe nouns)
- Conjunctions (serves to join words or groups in a sentence)
- Gerunds (-ing form of a verb which is used like a noun)
- Prepositions (words that show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other words in the sentence)
After reading this unit, not only I have learned the different parts of speech and its subcategories, but I have also learned that there's a specific order to place them to make the sentence sounds more natural. For instance, when you have several consecutive adjectives describing a single noun, you often place them in the following order:
Size -> Age -> Colour -> Material.
Or when you have several adverbs in a sentence:
Place -> Manner -> Time
