The past tense has it's simple, continous, perfect, and perfect continuous forms. Each one must be understood and is built with it's own specific structure. For example, while one would use the past continous to show something was happening at a specific time in the past, one would use the past perfect continous to show that an action began at a time bofore a moment in the past and continued up to that moment. Students may have difficulties with with the verb tenses and the teacher must be careful to make sure there is clarity in areas such as how to ask questions in the past forms, or the difference between different types of sentences. A clear understanding of how to construct and use each form is going to be needed in order for the teacher to achieve the goal of the students being able to use and understand these tenses.
