Unit 13 dives into Pronunciation and Phonology;stressing that although it is a difficult and often neglected area of language to teach and understand even for the native speaker, it is nonetheless an extremely important and fundamental building block to the language. We are first given overviews of intonation and stress with common speaking patterns and techniques by which to teach students. Following these sections of Unit 13 is a review of the phonemic alphabet with symbols, which I found tremendously beneficial to this course, particularly for English with all of its odd spellings and like/unlike words (loved the poem!) To finish the unit, we were given a detailed breakdown of the parts of the mouth/nasal cavity/throat that are used for articulation, as well as the different manners by which sounds are created in speech.
I found this unit to be the most difficult area of study in the course thus far, in terms of content (the anatomical terms, the entire alphabet to memorize, and the different terms for articulations), as well as ear training for stress and intonations. I really got a lot out of Unit 13, but feel that it could perhaps be broken up into 2 separate units--perhaps with Stress/Intonation as one whole unit, and Phonemes/Articulation as another.
