Unit 20 is a troubleshooting unit, focused on common problems that arise in the classroom, with suggestions for solutions.
Topics include First Lessons, where I learned the two most important things are to establish rapport with the individual students and the class as a whole, while setting the tone for the entire course. There are methods listed to help the teacher accomplish these two goals.
Warmers topic includes specific activities to help establish rapport and capture interest. I learned the important thing is to keep the activities short and fun.
A discussion of the different levels of learning is presented with several suggestions on how to deal with the learning gaps. I learned that experienced teachers will adopt a mix of techniques (pairing weaker students with stronger students, use the same material but assign different levels of tasks, or just don't do anything different). I Think the approach must be based on the individual class.
How to deal with use of the native language by the students offered the suggestion to make sure the activities are at the appropriate level and the students have the necessary language to do them. This is a key point to me, that the teacher makes sure she is doing everything possible to keep the group motivated and progressing.
Reluctant students in the class presents the opportunity to use more pair work and role - play.
Difficulties with listening texts suggests making sure the problem is not the quality of the tape or the volume. I remember in my own experience how difficult it is to understand when a text is spoken by a variety of voices. More exposure to different speakers is essential, I think.
