Unit 18 completed the brief overview of English grammar. The point is made that the grammar sections in this EFL course is very basic, and only covers essential issues the teacher will most likely encounter. Basic English reference books are helpful, such as Michael Swan's "Practical English Usage" and Jeremy Harmer's "How to Teach English."
Here are some of the points I learned in this unit, beginning with "Modal Auxillary Verbs," which are used in the following manners:
1. To add meaning to the main verb by expressing ability (can); advice (should); obligation (must); possibility (might); permission/prohibition (may).
2. To express various degrees of formality, such as "can" or "may."
3. Modal verbs do not change form according to person, as in: "He can walk" (he has the ability to walk) and present simple tense "He walks."
4. Modal verbs are followed by a base form verb.
Active and passive voice is used to convey a shift of importance from the subject (doer in the active voice) to the object in the passive voice.
Relative clauses contain three catagories:
1. Independent clause - a complete stand alone sentence (This is the car.)
2. Dependent clause - not a complete sentence and must be connected to an independent clause (This is the car with four doors.)
3. Relative (adjective) clause - a dependent clause which gives more information about a noun (This is the car with four doors that has a large gas tank.)
Phrasal verbs whch are multi-word verbs acting as a unit. (The president called off the meeting.)
These are just a few of the things I learned, which made me realize the immense variety and subtleties in the English language. Even tho I use these expressions in daily life, the subtle implications were not as visible to me as they are now, thanks to these grammar lessons.
