This unit compares two different lessons. The first is poorly taught. The second lessons is considerably better. The unit highlights the clear differences in the effectiveness of a lesson dependent on a teacher's preparedness and skills.
In the first lesson the teacher doesn't engage well with the students. He doesn't explain or help the students when they don't understand but just continues repeating the same question or moving onto a new one. The elucidation of the grammar point is unclear and the study phase is poor. The final activate phase is extremely poor because the students don't understand what the teacher wants them to do.
In the second phase the teacher provides a clearer structure. He uses language during the engage phase that the students understand. When covering the grammar points he asks questions which gets the students to fill in the gaps of the grammar points and thus discover the grammar for themselves, or at least with him. When he gets the students to practice the grammar point on a worksheet, he first does an example question with them and then gets them to work in pairs. This means the students speak more and practice the grammar better. Finally he closes with a fun activity of bingo, which brings all the students in the group together and lets them interact in English together using the grammar that they've covered during the lesson.
The second lesson is presented in such a way that it has a clearer structure than the first lesson and the teacher takes the students through each step in the lesson in a more structured and understandable fashion.
