Unit 11 introduced us to the 4 basic skills of any language: Reading, Listening, (Receptive Skills) & Writing, Speaking (Productive Skills). 11 particularly focused on the teaching of Receptive Skills, and gave us some of the different reasons we might read/listen, and some of the specialist skills we might employ to sift through presented information (e.g. skimming, scanning). I liked the discussion about covering pre-vocabulary, as well as an incorporation of both authentic and inauthentic texts in a lesson to facilitate comprehension and understanding. In fact, I'm reminded of a French teacher of mine who in a happy medium, would incorporate genuine French newspaper articles alongside our inauthentic lesson worksheets to give us a better grasp of real-world language. I'm happy Unit 11 covered the importance of topic material, for though it seems like an obvious means of keeping students engaged, I believe in the midst of lesson planning a teacher might overlook the students' interests in favor of an easily teachable topic that might bore the students or have little practical application in their lives (e.g. would nautical terms be appropriate to teach beginner students living in the countryside? Probably not.)
