This unit focuses on how the challenges of teaching receptive skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening.
I found it interesting when it suggested two categories for these skills- for a purpose and for entertainment. I hadn't considered looking at the skills from these two different purposes before.
The unit then goes on to describe how we read and listen and the problems faced when teaching the skills. It splits the problems into four areas (language, topics, creating interest and tasks) and suggests how to overcome the problems. I found the section concerning interesting tasks the most useful in this unit. The suggestion for a jigsaw reading exercise with two students having to ask each other for information about the other's text seems like a very good way for students to both learn and use the language that they've learnt.
The unit finishes with a suggested lesson plan for a patchwork lesson and then gives an example reading lesson. Most useful here for me was the list of basic keys to a successful lesson.
