Speaking and writing are two productive language skills. Speaking requires a higher level of fluency that allows the student to communicate with little prep time whereas writing requires a higher level of accuracy that requires the student to be able to produce a communicative message that is understandable and in some situations relays the proper tone or attitude depending on the formality of the context of the writing. In either case, there are motives for communication, and it is important that while teachers strive to teach accuracy and fluency, they also incorporate the motivation for the students to communicate in order for the students to excel and improve.
