This unit covers some of the more advanced aspects of English grammar, including modal verbs, reported and indirect speech, the passive voice, and phrasal verbs. The modal verbs include words like "should", "could", "can", "will", "may" and "might", and all have specific uses. For example, "could" and "should" both suggest advice, whereas "may" suggests uncertainty. Almost all can be used to make speech and writing more formal. Indirect and reported speech often requires accompanying clauses to clarify who or what is being spoken about. The passive voice changes who or what is the key figure of interest in the statement. And finally, the phrasal verbs are an almost unique part of English grammar, in which a word can be changed entirely by adding a different preposition or a phrase, that may be intransitive or transitive depending on the verb itself.
